Farewell!

I have always loved my work, but after more than 30 years, I have decided to retire at the end of June.  After a few months break, I plan to volunteer at YES College Prep High School training their teachers to run a reading program like mine.

Already I feel the wrench of knowing I won't be seeing all of you next year at the office.  Do write to me at  readglass AT gmail DOT com or call me if I can be of help to you.

The website will be up for another year or two, and I will update it from time to time.  Some of the wonderful people who work for me may do some tutoring later in the summer or next year.

How to Get A’s at the Modern School

In the classroom:

  • Sit in the front row
  • Take all of your materials
  • Open your homework and be ready before class starts
  • Follow the SLANT rules:  SitupstraightListenAskandanswerNodTracktheteacher*
    (*Kipp Rules)

At Home Preparation:

  • Buy a bulletin board and a small filling cabinet.
  • Organize your materials; we’ll show you how.
  • Avoid temptation. Leave your phone and games in the kitchen.
  • Ask your family to give you two hours of uninterrupted time—after you’ve done your share of chores.
  • Eat healthily.
  • Decide when you are going to study on the weekend, before you decide to do the things you want to do.

Studying:

  • Start with your hardest subject.
  • Review what you did in class and then prepare for the next day.
  • Flag or highlight the things you do not understand.
  • Once the hard subjects are done, move to the easy ones.
  • Lastly, see what tests you have this week, and start to prepare for them.
  • Success starts with you, so get ready.
